Default Local Renderer Plug-in Suite

Hi!

What are the nuts and bolts of this Local Renderer? Is it a plug-in available for every PTHD systems? Can I download it from anywhere or do I need something else in addition?
I mean, it sounds simple enough from Dolbys official "Authoring for DolbyAtmos ® CinemaSound Manual"

"Local Renderer Plug-in Suite: The Dolby Atmos Local Renderer plug-in suite (or local
renderer) lets you create, edit, and monitor Dolby Atmos material in a mix room or
edit suite that is not configured with a Dolby Rendering and Mastering Unit (RMU).
See the manual for your Dolby Rendering and Mastering Unit."

Anyone care to explain, thanks!

i have run into the same problem - there seems to be plenty of sites explaining how it works, but the plugin itself seems elusive.

The plugin has to be obtained directly from Dolby, and is afaik provided mainly for post faciities that has Dolby Atmos mixing capabilities and people working on projects that will be mixed in Dolby Atmos.

Can registered Dolby users download the Local Renderer plugins from the Dolby website?

I'm not sure, but I don't think so. I got mine directly from the Dolby engineer who did the room alignment and RMU install.

Time limited licenses are usually given out to editors on request when you work no a film that is a Dolby Atmos production.
The local renderer is a monitoring plugin with 16 outs (speakers) max. It's not made to do an Atmos Mix in the box. It also doesn't have any of the 1000-band EQ per speaker channel either. It's really only to roughly listen to a session that has Atmos panning in it in a scaled down edit room with a mini-atmos or 9.1 setup.
You'll still need the RMU actually mixing.

Is there any publicly available knowledge on when this will become either a plug-in or an app that can run on the same CPU as Pro Tools?

The Local Renderer does work as a plugin. It is just not available for sale. It is only given to RMU owners. Normally these include dubbing theatres that need to premix in Atmos in their edit rooms.

But the Local Renderer, in conjunction with the Atmos Panner plugin, the DA, the monitoring and something like V-Control Pro 2 and one would be able to tinker, Obviously, one still needs the room and the calibration, (which the RMU has built in). But the calibration method manual is available on the Dolby website and all calculations are based the Smaart software. Hence, it could be possible to work out something on a lower budget scenario.

The local renderer was invented to enable sound editors to monitor or prepare sessions that contain Atmos panning in a scaled down room with a maximum of 16 speakers not the full blown 64 speaker-channel outs that the RMU has.

It also doesn't contain the filtering technology by Lake that does the 1000+ band EQ per speaker channel which is the key to the tonal matching of each speaker to enable seamless panning across so many speakers.

It also doesn't have the dynamic control feature that would spread a very loud sound across multiple adjacent speakers to increase headroom for that moment.

It also doesn't do any kind of stem rendering of beds and objects to multiple outs that the RMU does which is essential to keep your workflow efficient regarding stem layouts in multiple rendered formats at the same time (9.1, 7.1, 5.1 etc.)

And last but not least you won't be able to create an Atmos-Master without an RMU.

The Atmos suite is normally available to people (editors / mixers) that work on an Atmos licensed films so they can roughly listen to the panning in a non-Atmos edit room and it's normally a time limited license. You don't need to own an RMU to get access to the plugin suite.

It is by no means the RMU in a plugin. It is a plugin but it's quite different from the RMU. All it does is render the pan-automation to the given speaker setup for simple monitoring applications which is just a small part of the Atmos technology involved.

Here's a good write up:

Hey Frank,

of course all you mention are 100% right. I am not suggesting that by having the local renderer one can start cowboy mixing in atmos. But you can just about get your hands dirty with the new format, if working in a facility that is not employing an RMU unit just yet. And to further clarify, I mean to just get some experience of how the object rendering works and what is to have panning control on the Z axis.
