I did some recent testing with the Carbon.
In particular the connection to the old Apple Thunderbolt Display 27 which has an AVB compatible Ethernet port.
Everything works perfectly with this Thunderbolt display which dates back to 2011!

Actually I use a 2010 27" Cinema with the (mini display to TB adaptor) connection going into my 2020 iMac and it works fine
