Default Avoiding Latency while Tracking

hello,

Is there a way i can avoid latency while tracking vocals, I have the buffer to it's minimum (128) but there is still a little latency, i wonder is there a way to avoid the signal playback while tracking vocals, is there a option for that in the settings, playback engine. I have everything running through my analog Mackie 24/8 console, bus out to my ProjectMix into Pro Tools. I can mute the track that's being recorded into protools to avoid the latency echo effect and just deal with the latency if i have to do punch ins. i'm looking for a better method if there's one.

thank you

The only way to get around this is to spend the bucks for an HD system! That's the only advantage anymore is delay compensation... it can't be done on PTLE or M-Powered.

You may want to setup your mix desk so that you can have the open mic monitoring LIVE through your console and you only hear the track when you playback.

I used to do this all the time with our Studer A800 24-track. It worked great as the singer could sing-along with their previous take, yet when you punch-in the output of the tape track would MUTE and you'd only hear the live mic.

We have a PT le and somehow we have a work around the latency problem.

The trick is to monitor everything on your 1/2 output. set your recording track to input only so you can hear your talent inside the booth all the time. Yes, you need to mute the monitor output of your mic pre-amp, (I dont know if this will work if you're using digi002 pre-amp). also, set your system to low latency. We transfer the recorded track to new one so that you can hear its playback.

We've been running this setup for almost three years already and we havent hit any snag we cant work around.

Again, dont attempt to monitor on 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8 or else there will be latency on your monitoring.

hope this will also work for you.

REgards,

JS

Is there any plans to implement Direct Monitoring (like Global Disable in Cubase) in a future version of M-Powered so that you don't hear the track you are recording with that latency? It seems like there should be a simple way to record without hearing that slapback delay thats software-based.

From the control panel for the projectmix you can set up direct monitoring by routing the inputs directly to an output.

or...

I use the Behringer headphone amp that allows the mixing of two inputs to a single set of cans. My main input is the mix coming of off the projectmix, then the aux input is a mult'ed input from the preamp of that particular player. With a mixer you could be doing subgroups to feed the headphone amps's aux input.

on the 1814 I just mute the track in PT & monitor the direct input from the sound card. if a punch in is needed just make a new track, & record the new vox to it, then cut & paste. other than that you got latency
