Tracking Latency

I am looking into getting a 002R, but have a few questions about latency. When tracking 12-16 inputs at once, is the latency a problem? For example with drums. I would like to monitor through the protools mixer.

I have been using a RME soundcard with total mix to get past this. If my computer was fast enough, could this work and still be stable?

Anybody tracking full bands? This would be for basic tracks.

I've got an Allenstein and have no problems tracking rhythm section (drums, bass, keys). Go for it.

You shouldn't have any trouble tracking 12-16 inputs, with a reasonably fast computer, at a very low H/W buffer setting.

But here's a question: If you're tracking that many inputs - will the players be listening in headphones? If they're NOT, then latency seems like a non-issue.

If the absolute lowest latency is required, Low Latency Monitoring mode can be used, which disables any plugins on the record-enabled tracks.

with a good computer(check out the post "Best Desktops for PTLE"), latency will not be an issue at all. You'll find for about 500 bucks you can get a rock solid system that will beat most G5's in performance.

This sounds like good news!! I would be putting together a new computer just like the Allenstein from the Best Desktop posts.

Yeah, I would want to send the players a headphone mix out of protools. But do not want the latency delay to distract them. Mainly the drums, or anything else for that matter.


What about when overdubing vocals? Say you have a mix built up with fx and such, but need to redo some vocals. Does "Low Latency Monitor" handle this well, without playing back rough? I know that "LLM" with disable any RTAS fx on the record enabled channels. That is ok with me as long as playback and recording are smooth with the latency low enough not to cause any noticable delays to the vocalist.

I've used the Hear system with a producer friend's 002 system and fed the headphones via the ADAT I/O to avoid D to A latency.. and work in LLM.
