Default 16 inch Macbook Pro - performance?

Quick questions for those that are running these "scissor" 16 inch MBP that came out in november.

1. Anyone successful in restoring a previous system running Mojave?

2. Fan noise - (our 2019 15inch fans kick in a lot using a fan utility) just wondering if these models run a little cooler?

Thanks in advance!

I have one of the new 16" MacbookPros, not satisfied with my purchase decision at all. The fan noise is terrible. Starting the computer has the fans go into 70-90% speed. This is due to Avid Link taking 300%, or more, CPU usage.

If I open a simple session with 5 aux tracks, and 2 Arturia SoftSynths, I'm at 50% fan usage.

Thinking about returning this model and getting a MacMini instead. But I then lose the portability I need for dub stages.

The reviews say that the 16 inch (scissor) supposedly runs around 20-30% cooler.

I use a fan utility to manually keep the fans reasonably quiet on my 2019 - 15inch.

We sold the 15 inch so we have to pickup a new one.

We have been running pretty good for music production (a few VI) and Final Cut Pro on the 2019 15inch I9 with only 16G RAM, but this is our chance to at least go with 32G Ram.

Catalina seems to be working good for most people

Hi,

I want to bump this thread to get more recent info from folks. Anyone using the most recent 16" MacBook Pro for pro level ProTools work? I'm considering configuring the fastest processor, max RAM, 2TB SSD and best graphics card to use stand alone and/or in clamshell or dual monitor mode. I need this to be both a portable and desktop solution.

Anyone have useful real world feedback?

Thanks in advance!

I am sure it is very much usable, but the question you need to ask from those who have that model is this: how much noise is there when you actually start using the system?

A LOT! I use it for travel purposes along with a X4 Apollo and as soon as it gets to about 8-10 tracks it sounds like a jet engine

For my purpose of just having the MBP along in hotels and so on it doesn’t matter much due to headphones but in a Pro studio with only that Mac .... NEVER EVER!

It makes the desk vibrate when fans kick in and even worse with a few UAD plugins or any plugins for that matter! A little less fiesty with LIVE10Suite but still this unit is not meant as a recording device in any way shape or form as the only computer.

My collegue always bring hos Acer from 2018 and I could get fooled it was turned OFF if I didn’t see the screen! And it was a 3rd or less cost.

It is mid 2020 and still no all-in-one Apple unit and our new 2019 Mac Pro’s loaded with hundreds of tracks whispers compared to these MBP’s

I'm running an older MBPro with Catalina and I always uninstall Link and Cloud Services after each upgrade. But when I moved to PT 20.5 my fans started working overtime. The culprit for me was Avid's video engine which is "on" by default. I work in audio only so once I disabled that (Setup >> Playback Engine >> uncheck Video Engine Enable) the fans went back to sleep. YMMV

Yeah we turned off all that but there is something with Catalina and PT 2020 that just doesn’t click. On Live10 Suite we have a bit less fans but still way too much.

The old MBP 2015 I have and my old 2013 both i7 32 GB ram and both 1TB Flash drives are way quieter than these new macbooks. I know what you mean ut your mac is older.

Well this isn't the news I was hoping for......

Sounds like this isn't a good idea then. I'm pretty intolerant of noisy laptops. My 2013 runs silent unless I'm really beating on it. Time for plan B......
