Default OT: Which backup drive would you NOT buy?

I'm trying to narrow the possibilities for a backup drive. I have heard of problems with LaCie drives. Any others I should avoid? Or, if you want to be direct, any you could recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Avoid Maxtor for video & audio work.

are you looking for a permanant backup (i.e. archive) solution?

if so, a hard drive may not be your best choice...magnetic media in general is not ideal for long term storage.

Galaxiejer,

That's a good question. My plan is to use the drive as a continuous backup, and eventually to burn sessions to disk as archive (I know, probably not the most permanent). But, tell me more about magnetic media...is there a preferred Manufacturer? What does the cost look like compared to a hard drive?

Thx.

Like the poster above said. Avoid anything from maxtor (or comp usa for that matter) Check this drive

My friend uses this w/ a G4 laptop and records his sessions to the drive. They're pretty cheap too.

This guy shows you how to build your own HD. Check it out.

Hope this helps

As Trash Man mentioned above, OWC firewire drives are great for audio and video, however he linked to the wrong drive - here's the link to the firewire oxford 911 drive+enclosure:

OWC Firewire Drives

I currently have 6 of these drives, and have 2 more on the way (all with IBM drives inside, as also previously mentioned, STAY AWAY FROM MAXTOR).
