Default Can't switch between Pro Tools and Logic. Hardware in use.

Hey,

I'm a user of both Logic and Pro Tools, and often need to switch back and forth between these apps.

Often when switching from Logic to PT, the core audio hardware permanently "grabs" the digi hardware, preventing me from opening protools. When I open PT, it says the hardware is in use. I confirm this by opening the core audio manager by itself, which reads, "not connected (HW in use)." Turning the 002R on and off does nothing. In order for PT to work, I need to reboot.

This is less likely to happen if, after a fresh restart, I open Protools first. It's more likely to work this way, but if I switch back and forth a few times eventually it will get stuck.

I'm on 10.6.5 and PT 8.0.4cs2, Digi 002R, with all of the current drivers (to my knowledge). Attempted all the standard troubleshooting protocols. This problem has been happening for many moons and I have tried complete reinstalls, and have been through several complete system updates. Nothing seems to fix it.

Any ideas? I'm fresh out. I can't seem to pinpoint the exact cause or identify a process in the Activity Monitor that might be responsible.

Cheers
Adam

If you can allow it, run a minijack to twin RCA cable out from your mac in to the alt src inputs of the 002r. Set logic to run off built in audio and when you want to hear logic just press alt src. Not a perfect situation but it will save all the headaches.

Digi core audio drivers are reknowned for being pretty awful so don't expect too much from them. Another option could be to pick up an Mbox 2 because they have multiple client drivers so pro tools or another app doesn't tie up the hardware.

Thanks for the reply.

I wish this were the solution for me. Unfortunately I need the input/output capability of the 002R accessible from Logic.

Does PT 9 help at all? Or do I just need a different interface to solve this problem?

A

When you quit Logic, are you making sure to quit CAM and give it a few moments to release the hardware before launching Pro Tools?

Thanks for the response.

Yes. I always quit CAM, but the time I wait doesn't seem to matter. Still get the error, "protools is either not installed or un use by another program."

What are the possible reasons for it not releasing? How can I force the hardware to be released?

cheers

Hey Digi,

Any advice here?

As you say, I give the CAM plenty of time to release the hardware, but it almost never does. I still get, "Not Connected (HW in use)."

I know this is a touchy subject because there are so many people pissed about Core Audio, but I'm not looking for trouble. Just another troubleshooting suggestion.

Cheers

Before you quit out of CAM, does it show '0' attached clients? If it's showing attached clients - make sure to quit out of them and that CAM shows no attached clients before quitting it and launching Pro Tools.
