Understanding automation / faders control?

Hi guys,

im starting back at PT now its been a few years. Im wondering if i set some volume automation on a track in 1 or 2 places, do i now need to use the automation to set my fader level in general.

For example.. if i have done a balance, then do a little automation, then client asks me to bring the x y and z track up a little, i cant do it unless i do it in automation lane? I cant just pull fader up a little as automation just send it back down?

Use trim mode. If you only want to offset levels up/down for the whole duration, you can easily do it in read+trim.

When all is good you can coalesce (ie: permanently burn) the trim/auto move(s).

Combine Trim with Touch or Touch/Latch if you want to drop in to do some actual adjustments to your written auto moves at specific spots.

As soon as I have my initial balance I put everything in touch+trim and build my mix as I go.

If on hd/cptk, check out the manual to see how you can use the powerful rehearsal features. for ex, to loop sections and adjust everything (plug-ins included) to perfection before comitting the auto. VCAs are also very useful and powerful mixing tools to learn to use.

Once you have automation that is how it works

When I started with PT 2 years ago I watched a tutorial where he put the trim plug on every track in the first plug box.

I dont put trim on every track now but I always leave the first box open just in case.

If you dont want to mess with the pencil tool to redraw automation
use to trimmer tool on the fist selection and you can move up or down the entire area of volume between the break points . Keep in mind it does work for complicated automation just between one break point to the next

I like to put break points where I want them, find out where I want the volume and use that trim tool to move the entire section up or down . FASTER THAN THE PENCIL at least it is for me

There is a better way, as said in the above reply but this is convenient and works just as well and fast . This is how I do it unless i need the extra plug in box .
