Default MIDI Patch Names

I just came from the OMS and had success with it for years. One thing I never figured out was how to get the patch names from any MIDI device if it wasn't already shipped. Pro Tools has always shown me every patch selection for my Kurtzweil PC88mx but not so for the Boss DR 770 or the Roland JV-1010. I did some research and found I had to make patch names from text files. Is there an easier way? Maybe it sounds harder than it is but it seems like a lot of work and trouble shooting. I am really supprised I wasn't able to just scoop these patch names off the internet. I don't know any computer languages but I understand enough to be creative with the tools I have. Now I have gone to OS 10 and even lost the Patch names for the PC 88mx. When i choose the file "Kurzweil PC88.midnam" it says either the manufacturer/model information or instrument mode do not match. If I have to build these text files I will but does anyone know any tricks for this? Or just some heads up?

H Bigbrendan,
I have made similar requests for patch names, and was directed to "CherryPicker" - which seems great, although not totally together for Pro Tools names just yet- so check out CherryPicker I did manage to load in the expansion card names for my JV1080, although , for the moment , this is a bit fiddly.

Contact Cherry Picker and see how things are going re Pro Tools- however I agree with you that it should be possible to grab patch names from within Pro Tools, but this obviously is not yet possible.

Found digicake, cool! Thanks but it still says either the manufacturer/model information or instrument mode do not match when I chose any .midnam from the file in Library/Audio/MIDI Patch Names/Digidesign/Roland/x.midnam This shouldn't be too much different than Opcode's Open Music System. I have never studied MIDI language but Text Edit with MIDI will really be fun. Is there a way to get a device to do a data dump on to the mac?

Yeah...I had the same problem with the Motif ES patch names. Look in the Audio Midi setup and observe exactly how the manufacturer and model names are shown in the fields. Then open the .midnam file with textedit and look down in the file for the place where the manufacturer and model names are defined. It's kind of obvious. Change the names in the file to match exactly how they are shown in Audio Midi.

In my case the manuf/model names were placed into Audio Midi by the USB installer that installed the USB driver for my Motif ES and they did not exactly match the names in the .midnam file. If you are using USB, you should start working once this is done.
If you use regular midid cables, you might have to go into midi setup and draw a connection to/from the midi interface to the Roland. The Midi software needs this connection in order to exchange application information with Protools for the midnam data purposes. I had to do this before my DX7 started working.

BEWARE: If you are on PT6.7 you must get at least cs7 or you PT will start crashing everytime you open a second default program change window once you have loaded .midnams. Actually I think cs2 fixes it but I went to cs7 since it was the recommended path at the time.
