Default Software Instrument (Xpand, Vacuum etc.) controls moving on their own

Hey Guys!

So this is a pretty whacky problem, but I've noticed the control knobs (volume, cutoff, etc. -- it's different with each instrument/patch) seem to be just randomly moving/changing values on their own either while I'm auditioning patches or playing back recorded MIDI data.

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Anyone have any ideas as to what would be causing it?

Could be automation - turn automation off and see if it continues.

It is not automation. In this case, I'm dealing with a Mini Grand whose Level knob will not listen to any change I make to it, it just jumps back to 7.8 and then sort of fluctuates between there and within a few values. If I drag it down to 4 or something, then press play again, it just bounces right back to 7.

I even tried to automate that knob, in hopes that it would override whatever is happening -- no luck.

It sounds like your system has a virus known as no manual-itus! There are a couple of ways to control volume automation. to the far left side of your edit window you will probably see a box named waveform. If you change that box to volume you will see a strait line that you could drag down then playback volume will be lower. Or the first button above the fader in the mix window is a button, If you change this to write it will write your moves in real time. Or you could lover the volume while recording. Probably in your case you'd just want to try my first suggestion.

RQS: I appreciate you taking the time to respond, but I don't think you understood the problem.

1. Automation will NOT overribe this problem. I'm not a n00b and automation is not the problem.

2. The problem is that the controls are moving without being told to do so by any other message (automation or not). Also, in this particular case, I can't even change the level of the knob while not playing back, without it returning to wherever it wants to be.

Again, I repeat, there are no automation levels set in my session on ANY track, let alone the track containing the Mini Grand.

Thanks!

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to insult you. You don't have many post so I didn't know how much experience you had, but if you have your piano set to return to an audio track it's going to respond to that tracks automation. (You don't have it set to a MIDI track do you?) Again I'd just drag down the volume automation as suggested in my first post.

It's on an instrument track. Again, automation is NOT solving the problem. I've tried to automate the knob itself, to no avail.

Have you turned off automation yet too see as mentioned by cwsand?

Double click on the zoom tool. Show both the MIDI vol and audio vol playlist and post a screen shot. Also, are you using a hardware controller? Having this change with every patch is definitely a head scratcher.

Well first of all you are running an unsupported Operating System. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Pro Tools and the Creative Collection.

Shan: I have turned off automation. Pretty sure I've already posted that all these suggestions have failed me. But here's your proof:

See how it's clipping? that's the main reason I want to fix this problem. The LEVEL knob on the mini grand is unresponsive to ANY change I make, whether manual or via automation. It just ignores everything and continues to revert to it's current level, where it's clipping.
