If you own an actual Apple computer, it is not illegal in the United States to install macOS onto another computer but you do so at your own risk with no tech support from Apple. It saved them multiple millions in R&D. the hackers wrote many drivers for them after Apple switched to Intel. Most of the early Hackintosh developers now work in high-level positions at Apple
