Default Single channel D/A?

I have a decent mic/preamp combo, but I'm still using a Digi002 as my audio interface. I suspect the A/D converters its using aren't the best, so I'm looking into bypassing it (using its SPDIF input instead of one of the analog inputs).

I'm only concerned with recording vocals, so I only need one channel of A/D. However all I can find is 2, 8, or 16 channels at $1500-$3000+.

Why aren't there any single channel A/D converters? Do I have to buy a stereo converter and just use one channel somehow? Does anyone else bypass the 002's A/D when recording? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Because there are no single channel interconnection formats.

You could look into getting your 002 modded by Black Lion Audio.

Here are a couple that are a little cheaper:

http://www.vintageking.com/Mytek-Dig...category=81775

On the Mytek, they also have one cheaper than that, but I've heard this one (that I linked to) is a definite step up from that.

It seems that with good quality conversion there is a base line cost to get to a certain quality, then after that, adding more channels doesn't increase the cost as much. That's why often an 8 channel is not 4 times the price of a 2 channel.

There's another option to look at, but it might be somewhat redundant because you mention you already have a preamp. You might check out the Focusrite ISA One. It's a pretty decent preamp, but it has an option for an a/d card on the back. I've heard the quality of that conversion is very good. You can also use the line in on the unit with that conversion. And it's 2 channel conversion. I believe you can use the preamp for one channel and have something else using the line in. It generally goes for $799 with the card, and sometimes you can get it on sale from musiciansfriend, etc.

Another option is the Audient MICO. I'm using one and clocking my 003r to it with very good results.

Since SPDIF is a 2 channel connection......anyway, the Presonus Eureka is a single channel preamp with converter(but the converter is 2 channel and you can cascade a second preamp). Assuming you want preamps as well as converters, check out the API A2D. Not cheap, but really nice(does anyone NOT like API preamps?). And I also would give a thumbs up on the BLA mode according to what I have heard and read about it.
