PC ASIO drivers for Digi001
Yeah, yeah. I know they dont exist. I dont care who should be writing them (Digi says Steinberg, Steinberg says Digi). I'm over it.
The thing is, I dont really want to sell my digi 001, which the advice usually given to someone in my position. I really like the hardware features and I actually like Protools LE, its just that I want to use Reason (with low latency) and Cubase as well. Is that so bad? Anyway, in my day-job I'm an IT developer/project manager and I'm usually quite capable of writing code to do things that the applications I work with dont do when needed. Although I work in the business software realm, this whole ASIO drivers thing has got me fired-up to go a bit more low level. I'm not exactly a C++ expert, but may be willing to become one if needs be. I've scanned over the ASIO SDK from Steinbergs site. Not exactly brain surgery. I have yet to review similar documents from Digi's site (I assume there are some). So to my questions: Has anybody here tried anything like this before? Any C++ coders out there who would like to get involved? Why are there Mac ASIO drivers and not PC? Who wrote the Mac drivers (digi or stein)? Would I be able to get source code for the Mac drivers to port? Has anybody tried this before? Am I completely crazy? At this stage I'm thinking it would be great to make this a joint effort and to realease the drivers under a GNU/open source type of arrangement. I know there are lots of muso's with tech day jobs. Surely the ability is out there somewhere!? The benefits are being able to use your digi001 effectively with all of your software, and having Digi001 owners around the world throw rose-petals at your feet where-ever you roam. Any thoughts? Re: PC ASIO drivers for Digi001
Don't you think it's a bit ridiculous when you have to start talking about writing your own drivers for hardware that should have them to begin with?
Besides, I don't think Digidesign would allow anyone else to release drivers for the Digi 001... Especially if you're considering giving the source code out. I see you don't appreciate such advice, but really ... You should be using whatever suits your needs best -as is-, because you can't really rely on what a company is gonna do in the future... especially Digi, who will rarely even mention their plans. -vl |
