Default Re: OT....... Processor Upgrades 100 or 133 MHz???

As noted above, your Mac has a 100Mhz bus speed. Think of this simply as the speed at which things can be thrown about on your motherboard.

CPU upgrades have to be either designed for a specific bus speed or have jumpers that can be configured for different bus speeds and boards. For example, the OWC 1.33 upgrade for your computer comes with 5 jumpers, which in various combinations, work with most AGP G4 Macs. The jumpers can also allow you to overclock the chip (though, IMHO, not a good idea). Check out the OWC (macsales.com) site and you'll find a very nice chart showing which CPU upgrades (from all companies) work with the different Macs, which bus speeds apply, etc.

None of this relates to memory capacity, really. That's determined more directly by CPU and motherboard design.

Here's a question for others replying... Back in the late 70s, early 80s, when one built computers more than bought them, the back plane/connector board was usually referred to as a "buss." When did we lose the second "s"?

Default OT....... Processor Upgrades 100 or 133 MHz???

When purchasing a processor upgrade card I have seen some companies that sell a 100 version as well as a 133 version. Other companies sell 100/133 versions i'm assuming they have a switch or jumper of some sort on them. How do you determine the bus speed of your system? I looked in the system profiler and couldn't find it. However, I did notice that all my memeory sticks are listed as pc100, which would suggest my speed is 100 right? BUT, I know I have at least one stick (512Mb I think) in there that is marked as a PC133 stick and still all my RAM works and is recognized by the computer. Can somebody please explain to me the significance of 100 and 133 to me in both the processor upgrade and memory capacity? Hopefully the question and explanation of my dilemma make sense. Any help is appreciated.

It should be the 100Mhz version if you're mac comes with PC100 ram.

The following G4s/G3s have PC100 RAM and a 100Mhz bus :

300,350 & 400 Mhz G3

350,400,450, Dual 450,500 and Dual 500Mhz G4s

These models have a 133Mhz bus and use PC133 :

466, 533, Dual 533, 667, 733 and Dual 800Mhz G4s

These have a 133MHz bus, use PC133 but they can't be upgrades any faster than 1.25GHz with ANY cpu upgrade because apple have done something to prevent it with the firmware :

800MHz, 933Mhz and Dual 1Ghz.

Hope this helps.
