Re: Mogami cables...
Hello aziel:
Your choice of cable is sort of the same as your choice of studio monitors. Once you get to the high end manufacturers, you will find that all of them do a relatively great job. It is very subjective to say which is best. I use Canare Star-Quad, Mogami and Monster in my studio. The Canare is my main point to point cable for balanced connections. I used it to connect virtually everything that is hard wired (including my patchbays). Each of the High and Low signals in a Star-Quad cable is represented by 2 conducters, which comprises 5 conducters (plus drain). This cable is incredible for RF noise suppression, but a bit more work to use (just for the extra 2 conducters per connection). I also use Canare 110 Ohm cable for all of my digital interconnects. I use Mogami for all of my portable gear and snakes. Mogami is GREAT. It is a breeze to work with and it is absolutely flexible and resilient. It withstands the constant wrapping and unwrapping and has never failed. (Mogami's multipair audio cable is its MG-293x series ... x varies with the number of conductors) I use Monster for all of my microphone and instrument cables. I suppose I have succumbed to Monster's transparency and time alignment hype. I'm sure there are many detractors here who would say there are no differences between Monster and other mic and instrument cables, but I HEAR them. Using Monster is like having a veil lifted off your microphone or instrument. In fairness, I have used each of these 3 manufacturers products interchangeably and have not been unhappy with any of them. There are many other great cable manufacturers as well (Belden and Gepco come to mind). My current cable choices have just been the result of my own personal process of refinement. Soldering your own connectors is a cost saving and, usually in the realm of studio wiring, necessary option due to the custom nature of each installation. As long as you are careful and proficient at wiring, you can do a very high quality job at a fraction of the cost of purchasing prewired harnesses or hiring someone to wire for you. Neutrik is also my connector of choice, but once again there are many other fine connectors such as Canare and Switchcraft. I wish you great success! Best Regards |

Re: Mogami cables...
My Suggestion is this- If you can use a soldering iron well, then it pays to make you own cables. If you have any doubts, don't. As for cable, Mogami, Belden, Canare, Gepco are all great. Aziel, there is a LOT of hype on this subject, and the bottom line is that 99.99% of people/manufacturers could not hear the difference is a double blind test. Spend money, but don't feel you have to get the most expensive cable just because someone told you to.

Re: Mogami cables...
If you're making up TT patch cables, you might want to avoid the Canare Star-Quad. Too bulky.

Re: Mogami cables...
Hello Brent:
You are right. Star-Quad is a BIT unwieldly but it was worth the effort! Best Regards |

Re: Mogami cables...
I totally agree with Todd and CO2.
Just about every brand uses the same material so there is no difference in the sonic quality. If you want to go with the "life time warranty" type of cables and pay extra $ its fine. Bottom line is that the recording, electronic and cabling technology changes so fast that you won't keep your cables for long enough to see the durability difference.
