Re: Cue sheets for stage?
Cue sheets are a big nuisance for the assistant editor, and fortunately are an endangered species as more mixers are dubbing directly from Pro Tools sessions and have an additional screen in front of them to see what is coming when. However some mixers use them to make notes during pre-dubs to tell themselves where they dubbed things and what they did.
Standard format is track names horizontally across the top and regions on their respective tracks proceeding vertically, with the beginning and ending times noted. Typically, film will be dubbed in Feet+frames, while television will have timecode reference. You will normally identify the character and the first few beginning and ending lines of dialog. It is most helpful if you print on 11x17 heavy stock. Also you will need to split cue sheets by reel, and make sure that your session starts on the hour if you are going to use feet+frames, or else your timings will be off. I haven't seen Track-it for a long time (it only worked with PT 4.3 sessions anyway, which was a big problem with 24 bit sessions). There is another application called "Tape" which does track sheets, as well as things like ADR cueing and Foley spotting. I've forgotten the name of the company, but Rick Steele at Echo Sound in Burbank was the principal designer. (It's been a while; I hope this info is correct...). Good luck with your cue sheets. Plan on spending a couple of sleepless nights doing them, as the reels are usually turned over to you the night before the dub. And you will hear about it if they are wrong! rcm

Re: Cue sheets for stage?
I have to chime in on this thread-
The notion of dubbing without cuesheets to me is one that is asking for great amounts of trouble. Mainly, because the cue sheet is marked up by both the editor and the mixer during the dubbing process. In large features there can (and normally is) dozens of predubs of various material. If a mixer chooses to bus an element into an "x-track" or commonly will choose from many different production dialog or ADR lines, he uses the cue sheet to note which elements went where and if they were used at all. ProTools has no reasonable facility to make similar mix documentation. Yes, Cuesheets are a drag, but if a mix has to be revivisited months or years after its conclusion, those cuesheets are the bible as to how it was constructed. A good inexpensive program to check out is "Mixmap" by demas. They can be reached at www.synclavier.com best regards- charles maynes

dr.sound replies:
If you are going to use Cue Sheets then use the link above from "Audiosfx". Wild Sync is the company of the Steele Brothers who make a program for Pro Tools and it is the best cue sheet pgm out there. The term Cue Sheets was to "Cue" the mixers on what tracks the elements were on and at what footage. There is a great picture at Disney Studios in Burbank that shows in the 30's a 3 man crew sitting behind a console of rotary pots with a Sound Supervisor seated behind them, who had this mechanical arm with a link to all the mixers cue sheets so they (the Re-Recording Mixers) could know exactly where they were as the film rolled on by. This was in the days when there wasn't any punching in or pec/direct mixing. You would rehearse over and over until you could do a pass without stopping!! Man are we spoiled!!

Re: Cue sheets for stage?
Mixmap works well, however they are difficult to get feedback from. I have not been able to get email or return phone calls from them when I tried to buy the program in January. I still do not have an answer to my question, will Mixmap be updated to OSX? (My original intent was to purchase, thus three phone calls were made. The OSX question was emailed and never responded to.) Because the question is not answered I can only assume it will not be updated or perhaps the company is no longer active, thus I am hesitant to buy it even if someone DID return my inquiry. The Wild Sync website does not mention OSX either. Does anyone know whether either of these work properly in OSX Classic mode?

Re: Cue sheets for stage?
Postman..
I would contact wildsync and ask..They are or um he is.. extremely responsive and have been very helpful in the past... Dr. Sound.. Yes we are extremely spoiled considering all those cues were written by hand. Imagine conforming a mix that way.. yikes...
