Default Pairing 002 and 002 rack

Are either of the following scenarios possible / practical?

1. Using both a 002 rack & 002 console together for 16 channels of i/o

2. 002 rack as interface, 002 console as control surface only. via standalone mode maybe?

I have a 002 console, but want to upgrade signal path. Looking to get a BLA signature mod 002 rack, but still need a control surface. Could sell 002 and purchase other ctrl surface if necessary.

Other suggestions to get close to HD quality without jumping to HD?

Thanks.
