Default Is desktop video 'good enough' in my use case ?

I work in video games with fairly short video captures of animation and gameplay footage. The videos are just reference for timing, most animations are just a few seconds long. The longest animation might be be 3min. We re-sync and do a final check from the game engine and can adjust there if needed.

I've just done a clean install of Mojave on my MacPro 5,1 so I can run the latest pro tools 2022.7 . I realize I'm pushing the limits with compatibility. Anyway I have this problem now where my BM Intensity pcie card doesn't display any picture. It works fine with Resolve but just black no picture in PT.

Can I just cut my losses here and run video off the desktop and run a 3rd display output from my video card to my TV ? Video card is RX560 Metal compatible.

Or will the sync be 'horrible' ... ?

You can measure it with a SyncOne2, Syncheck or Catchin' Sync app. In my experience, the place where you need really good video interfaces that are sync'ed properly is live action dialog editing and ADR. Plenty of composers I know don't bother with video interfaces simply because it's not necessary to have super tight sync for their playbacks.

I'd say it should be "good enough". I wouldn't use it for post but for game sound it will be checked within the engine as you say. Go for it.

Could the issue, in your case, be with something in the Pro Tools video engine hardware setup?

I ask that knowing that there are a large number of variables between our setups but I have just tried a test of PT 2022.7's video playback on Windows 10 machine with a PCIE BM Intensity Pro running an older version of BM desktop software.
My 2022.7 imported into a session and played camera original files from an old Sony XDCam HD cameras Blu - Ray disk happily sending audio and video via the BM card to a 40 inch TV without issues.

Hey Andrew thanks for checking.

Isn’t it suppose to “just work” ? Video shows online in the track. I am unaware of any other settings to enable output through the card.

Swapping the boot disk back to the old setup on the same machine with MacOS 10.12.6 , PT 20.9 , BM desktop 11.6 the card works fine.

In my case it did and has done so for all versions of Pro Tools for at the least the last 5 years. All on Windows computers.

The settings see here for video are From the Setup Menu open the Video Hardware Control Panel and make sure the BM device is setup

From the Option Menu that the Video track online is selected and make sure that the Disable Video Hardware is not selected.

I may have missed a setting as today is the first time I have looked for these settings in a very long time.

Good luck
Andrew

Turns out that the DVI display output of the RX560 video card apple lists as metal compatible doesn't work due to compatibility with the OS. Luckily all I needed to do was re-install the BMI driver 11.6 and the old Intensity Pci-e card is working again .. looks like I'm back in business.

I'd stick to BM 11.4.1 under Mojave. The newer ones that are compatible with Mojave have sync issues (drift etc.). 11.4.1 is solid.

Black Magic 11.5 & 11.6 had been previously supported, however a sync drift bug has been discovered. Please refer to the chart above for qualified versions.
