ProTools continuous scrolling with 144Hz monitor
Anyone have this going? Does the higher refresh rate make the continuous scrolling look a bit better or is there some limitation in ProTools that always makes it look just a tiny bit choppy?

What is your system (computer, OS, Pro Tools version, etc)?

Certainly a capable system. Basically you're either doing it or you've tried it and it works or it doesn't. If you're just guessing or reading the Apple website then don't bother responding because I've already done that.

Re: ProTools continuous scrolling with 144Hz monitor
Hey there,
I have experienced the same thing, hoping a faster monitor would offer some benefit. Over the winter, I bought a BenQ EX2710Q gaming monitor (1440p, 144Hz, 1ms motion response, 110 PPI) and the continuous scroll is still a bit choppy. This is seen while running dialogue edit sessions on a 2018 6-core 3.2GHz Intel i7 Mac Mini, 32GB ram. During playback, both CPU and GPU usage is very light. Adding an eGPU here would just be wasted money. Avid has been good about trying to collect data from my system, and even getting the support ticket higher up the ladder, but no fix so far. I would definitely suggest contacting them since your higher specs may offer a different look for them. Does anyone experience lag on an M1 during playback? If not, what display are you using? |

Re: ProTools continuous scrolling with 144Hz monitor
Finally someone else is trying to figure this out. I have an M1 laptop that I just put ProTools on. I can try that. As of now I am still experiencing the same issues (I mean they are very minor but I do still feel it should flow continuously). I have yet to get a hight refresh rate monitor. I am wondering if it is ProTools, the graphics card, the OS.... I'd imagine it's ProTools. I'll check back in about the M1.

Re: ProTools continuous scrolling with 144Hz monitor
According to the video below, the MacBook display has a horrendous, 30ms response time. The Pro Tools scroll performance is probably worse than ever...
(www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2xo-hDCgZE&t=854s) My experience with the BenQ monitor has been very positive, however. After trying four other displays, the BenQ specs and features are certainly the best combination for Pro Tools at 1440p that I have used. Gaming monitors clearly show a significant boost in the scrolling speed. While the scrolling judder is minimal, it is still noticeable. The scroll just isn't as smooth as expected (or marketed?), even though the Intel chip has no problems driving Pro Tools according to the OS Activity Monitor. So what's the issue? Through my long chain of support ticket e-mails, Avid simply ended up recommending that I upgrade to an M1. Perhaps the M1 will drive gaming monitors better, but for now, I think the BenQ is just fine until 5k retina displays become faster and cheaper. |

Re: ProTools continuous scrolling with 144Hz monitor
So I did this test on my M1 laptop. Current version of ProTools and I had zero issues. No stuttering at all. So I'm not sure. The M1 has 120Hz and the graphics and cpu are basically the same chip. I do hope Avid can address this because I would like to get a 144Hz monitor for this reason as well.

Re: ProTools continuous scrolling with 144Hz monitor
120Hz is zero issues but you want more? Care to explain to a dumb moderator what is the problem you are trying to solve? Your brain is just fine with 24fps...

Re: ProTools continuous scrolling with 144Hz monitor
It doesn't seem like you understand what we're talking about. It's about the scrolling stutter. 120Hz/ 144Hz is basically the same, a higher refresh rate that we're hoping will fix the stutter

Re: ProTools continuous scrolling with 144Hz monitor
Thanks for the update. I am surprised to hear the motion is smooth given the review from that YouTube video.
Here is a set of motion blur tests you could try using to compare your two systems... www.testufo.com These tests look really great at 144, but the Pro Tools scroll is still shy of matching these. No clue why. For kicks, you could try picking up a ~$200 gaming monitor from Best Buy to try out with the MacBook in clamshell mode. Over HDMI, the most you'll get is 144Hz. DisplayPost is capable of faster rates. |
