Is this with a new cable or the same one you started with? In my own case, I had the factory cable and it had never been moved or repatched before it failed. A replacement form cablestogo.com solved it and that cable went for years until I moved to HD/Native. At this point, its time for you to include COMPLETE details about the entire setup and computer so we don't have to guess and take pot shots in the dark

One thing I would do(assuming a new FW cable): shut everything down, disconnect power and reseat the firewire card in the computer(if it is a separate card). I have other ideas, but without knowing everything about the setup, its a waste of time
