Default MAX Carbon DSP video

So I was curious what would be the situation in which I would max out the DSP processing . Given the 8 HDX chips in the Carbon are one less than 1/2 the number (18) on a single HDX card .

So I decided to que up a 50 tracks session and start loading DSP plugins and also play with the Hybrid situation of some DSP Tracks and some native
I did a screen recording and here are the results

Were you on HDX prior to this move? I remember you from forums but not what you were using. I'm thinking of Carbon for the future.

thanks

No I had a Avid Omni and was running it HD Native on the HDN PCIe card in my mid 2010 Mac Pro,,,,so other than the three times over the years I had recorded in Professional studios, I had no experience recording using HDX processing at home . I do think it is a slight overall improvement over my old system both in ease of recording and sound

Thanks for your reply. First look at this from an HDX perspective is "less" power. However if I could automatically switch it on/off easily I can see getting away with 8 chips. I use more because I don't want to have to switch them by hand all the time.

I truly hope AVID decides to code for the new Apple silicon. It would make it an easier switch for HDX users that want to do so.

Glad you digging your new gear!

Only a slight improvement in sound quality?

I too have Omni + HD Native PCI and am curious about the sound quality (pres/line IOs/HP) of Carbon versus Omni?

I think I understand and Yes definitely less DSP processing power than a single HDX card no question . As far as "automatically switch" I am not sure I understand ? Do you mean like one keystroke or button, to have all the tracks in the session either go in or out of DSP mode ? Then no nothing like that so far . But then again I'm not sure I would use that , as for me the real strength of Carbon is the ability to have some tracks in and some out . And also I have mine set up in preferences to automatically switch into DSP if I click either the Input monitor button or the record button) and then there are the normal type Keystrokes that can put all highlighted tracks in or out

Well Yes, because I sold my Omni and can't make a real time A/B comparison, and the recordings I made with my Omni were pretty good sounding.
I hesitate make any claim other than It seems to me to be a slight improvement in sound quality. I honestly never used the Omni onboard mic pre's much because I have a nice 2 channel tube mic pre. BUT if I am remembering correctly I think the Carbon pre's are a bit more clear and present But I will say that due to the HDX processing there is IMO a noticeable improvement in the way recording overdubs feels to me while playing a new part and listening to the previous parts at the same time. It just feels more right there live.

Looks like you have a lot of power now to get things done. Good video BTW.

Does Carbon have direct (analog) monitoring (e.g for vocal tracking) through its mixer to the Headphone outputs?

The direct signal? No. You're monitoring through Pro Tools, either with Input monitoring or monitoring the track as it is recorded.

Of course with the HDX chips, monitoring through Pro Tools and whatever dsp plugins you have on that track, feels very natural. No discernible latency from the vocalists whom I have recorded the past few weeks, or as me or the other guitar players have experienced.

My Clarett 8PreX has the direct monitoring, and it works well enough, but nowhere near as nice as the Carbon, and there is not an additional layer of software control that you need to navigate either.

I LOVE the fact that I can have up to 4 discrete HP mixes right out of the box.
