Default Opinions on Slate virtual tape machine?

Hi,

As i own other slate products i can buy this for a good discount, but offer ends monday! I downloaded the demo and had a quick play and quite liked it so far, but don't have time to really test it out.

I personally like it better than the kramer tape, but a bit less than reel tape from avid (I know how that can sound strange :P but eh tastes). If you like it and you like the workflow, then go for it.

I like it and use it. There is a place for all of those mentioned by Manny above.

well, it sure doesn't sound like my studer,
(or our otari, ftm)
but it can be a cool effect when you want to color something.
it can also help with de-essing vox, taming hi hats, clack on a bass, or fizz on a gtr.

tho, if i really want to fatten drums, let's say, i find the kramer does a more spectacular job.
as always, gain settings means a lot.

added to that list should be the mc dsp ac2, which can add a nice bump,
or over drive;

and, imo, the saturation champ is the kush ubk-1
which can glue nicely just inserting,
without any level adjust at all...

e
for the record

UBK1 is so tweakable. And you don't HAVE to use all the sections, all the time. Definitely a nice "analogizer" tool.

The top end compression can be nice/useful on vtm but it quickly gets out of hand. You can get the same type of effect with the ubk with more controllability. Plus VTM is a REAL cpu hog. I find I use it less and less whereas even the old inflator is still surprisingly useful.

I went for the sale and find it very useful. I do like it on drums, and the 2 track setting is nice on the master as it adds a kind of "glue". It is power hungry(so it only gets activated when I go to mix, and push the buffer to 1024).

I hadn't touched Kramer since I've had it which is from day 1 whence it came out

It's my fave, although I can't put the UA in the mix being that's the only 1 I hadn't tried...

Looks a lot like how I'd use it here.

Although it is not a one size fits all approach (obviously) on the 2buss and, depending on the material/source, it can get a bit gooey sometimes if you pile up console emu/buss comp/tape emu.
