Default Calculate tempo does not match tempo ruler

I have a tempo ruler that clearly shows a tempo of 90 bpm. When I use the Tempo Operations window to create a tempo curve in the ruler, however, if I click on 'Advanced' and choose Calculate start tempo, it finds a tempo of 120. And it is only by using this 'wrong' start tempo of 120 that I can create a curve that actually begins at 90 bpm. Could this have something to do with having imported a tempo map from a MIDI file at some point? Other suggestions, solutions?
