Default HD I/O and 002R - Optical

Hello everyone,
I'm a teacher at a local university. They have a HD I/O connected to a C24 running Pro Tools 10 with 8 analog outputs. I have a 002R that I would like to connect to the HD I/O box via Optical to get tracks 09-16 out for teaching/demonstration purposes. I went through several, online discussions and thought I had the answer, however, when I hooked it all up, it didn't work. I noticed that the 002R wasn't recognized as a separate option in Pro Tools under the Playback Engine drop down menu (and that is probably the issue.)

This was the base Setup:

1 Mac Tower
1 C24
1 Hd I/O
1 002R

HD I/O optical loop with 002R
002R connected to Mac via firewire
Hardware = HDX
Playback Engine = HDX
ADAT Optical = 09-10, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16
Hardware = HD I/O
Clock = Optical

When it didn't work I changed a few settings and was eventually able to achieve clock sync through the optical connection (maybe not exactly as noted above but it was achieved.) However, I wasn't able to get signal out of the 002R. I even had a certified Pro Tools technician come in to double check my setup and they confirmed that my concepts, connections and settings were correct and couldn't get it to work either. At this point I am guessing that software drivers are missing or the 002R is not compatible with the HD I/O hardware.

I'm looking for answers from people with experience in this setup and are willing to share their settings or an Avid representative to confirm or deny that the hardware setup can even work.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,
Not 100% sure if i understand the setup correctly, but you can not use one pt to control both interfaces. You need one to tell the hdx hardware to play back, and another pt to tell the 002 to record.
And that means two computers. And then playback from hdx through adat and record from adat on the 002. Make sure you set your clock right and the 002 digital interface to adat, not spdif.

If you're adventurous you could try one computer running two pro toolses, (1x10 and 1x11, one for hdx and one for 002) but i never tried that. I did it with Logic and Pt on one mac, each with its own audio interface.... That works....

I'm actually using the same computer to play back tracks 09-16 using the 002R slaved through the optical connection to the HD I/O. This is the same concept as adding a third party, 8 pre interface using optical. In theory, it should work fine because that is the whole point of having the optical connection. I really don't care if I can record using the 002R.

The main problem here is that no HD system will aggregate with any other interface. If HDX is chosen as the interface, then it can not be combined with anything else.

The other problem is that the 002 does not function like a third party 8 pre expansion unit, such as a Focusrite Octopre or Presonus Digimax. It does not function in a standalone mode like those units do. It only passes audio when it's hooked up as an interface, which can not be done, as mentioned, because HDX is chosen as the interface.

You need to have two computers in this setup. Your HD setup will not be able to use the 002R so there must be another PT for it.

Once you have two PT running, here's what you do:
- connect the opticals from HD to 002R both ways, so you get a sync
- set the 002R to ext.clock (accepting clock from the opticals).
- control the 002R from another computer

I'm not sure about the following; if you have two HD licenses you should be able to set up the 002R as a satellite to the primary system, but I have never tried this with HD and LE hardware so that's where it might fail. If it works, your slave session transport would be controlled from the primary session.

What we wants is something the 002R can not do, free standing converter
the 002 can but not the 002R
A freestanding AD/DA box would be easier than 2 computers but if the C24 is wired in what do you want/expect with extra I/0?

Sell the 002r. It will get almost enough cash to buy a used A>D card for the 192 and then you can feed all 16 preamps of the C24 directly to the 192.

Please read the posts before answering the question. For instance, I say that I am a teacher and trying to use the school's HD I/O in conjunction with my 002R. Why the hell would I sell my 002R? Oh, and "almost" doesn't work in my book.

Hi, i was under the impression you wanted to use the 002 as extra audio interface, if you only need to use it as extra ad converter then buy Reaper for 60 usd, set it up with 8 analogue inputs routed to the 8 adat outputs and run that in the background of your hdx system...
Reaper is nice software to have and in this example it would enable the 002 to function as an AD converter...

Interesting idea, though that is more than I make in an hour (plus taxes). With that said, are there any videos where they show the setup and it actually working?
