Default 24bit tracks on ProTools III

Page 256-260 on PT III Manual says:"24bit In&Out capability using PT III is actually capable of 24bit mixing. The only restriction is on record and PLAYBACK!!!(Does anybody,s mixing without listenning the tracks?)
My question: Can I record a 24bit tracks in Sound Designer 2.83 thru the digital In on my 888, import those in PT III and make final mix thru the digital Out of 888I/O ,or bounce the mix as 24bit file on disk, listenning the all tracks during mixing? Trying to do this,DAE says "That,s 24bit file, DAE is not capable to use 24bit files...or whatever ?"So that I,m not able even to import the file into the session!

Default Re: 24bit tracks on ProTools III

what the manual means is that the aes digital ports are (and have always been) capable of passing 24bit audio. i remember the dark ages of using pt3 for mastering, where we'd play from a magneto optical or sadie (20 and 24bit audio) into pt3, then out back to the sadie or another mo. Ever digital recorder has this same restriction. Studer's D827 has 24bit a/d's but only records 16bit audio on tape. Sony's 3348 is the same way, unless it's an HR, then it does record 24bit. Think of your dae as the tape machine of protools. If it can't deal with a 24 bit file, then you can't force it to take an audio file it's incompatible with. Maybe you could upgrade to a later version that is 24bit capable for recording. Even DAE 5.0 won't let you import a 24 bit file into a 16bit session, or vice versa. Good luck
