Expected latency with software instruments
Hi, I have Protools M-powered 7.1x with a M-Audio USB Audiophile. It works great so far (without instruments) but at a 256 samples latency (5.8 ms), which is a lot I think especially when comparing Logic on Leopard with a Firewire interface where I can run stable at 128 samples or less... So what latency should you expect in Protools M-powered? What latency should I expect from a Firewire M-Audio interface instead of a USB? 256 samples is too much for software instruments I think so... How do I improve it? I cannot even see a option less than 128 samples in the program..? Does this mean this software is not suitable for software instrument? Latency is everything when playing software instruments. Anyone running stable at 128 samples? How? /floatingpoint_32bit |

Re: Expected latency with software instruments
128 is the lowest you can run in MP. I can run stable at 128 with my firewire 410 interface, at least for tracking. I run EZdrummer and Xpand with no problems. Once you start mixing and cranking up the plugin count, then you have to raise the buffer, but for tracking I haven't had any problems at 128. I agree that the software should let you go lower if the hardware will, and my firewire 410 works fine with Toontrack Solo at 64 samples.

Re: Expected latency with software instruments
Thanks for the answer. I reduced the number of tracks to 12 and now I can run stable at 128 samples even on my Audiophile USB! Apparently it is possible to get low latency even with USB interfaces... When you run @128 samples, how many tracks etc do you have? /floatingpoint_32bit |

Re: Expected latency with software instruments
The largest session I have right now is 11 audio tracks. If I don't have D-verbs and FX plugs on the tracks, I had no problems recording 2 new audio tracks and an instrument track with EZdrummer plugged in....I can only do 2 at a time with the firewire 410...

Re: Expected latency with software instruments
I am in the same boat and stuck at 256 samples with my Mbox2 and it is USB as well. I will be stepping up to the Projectmix soon for more inputs but it is very frustrating.
