The 16 core CPU still has quite a high clock speed and there is a big price jump to the next step. There's a limit of 768GB RAM up to that point, and the 24 and 28 core can take 1.5TB.

[forum is only letting me post one sentence at a time!]

It's worth getting 6 (or 12) RAM DIMMS, which uses the triple-channel architecture for more speed. But don't buy Apple RAM - after market stuff is about 1/3rd of the price and just the same.

-actually - if it already has Apple RAM, then you need to work out if the cheapest thing to do is add two more sticks of Apple RAM, or take it all out and buy 6 sticks of something else. Although Apple and non-Apple stuff should work together, it doesn't always happen that way (due to different latency specs).

Obviously there are even cheaper sticks to try, but I have never experienced any trouble with www.macsales.com products. They are probably better than Apple Spec.

mac-factory claim to use new and unused Macs and performs RAM and CPU upgrades.
They also only use new Intel Xeon processors and new RAM from high quality manufacturers such as Samsung, Hynix, Micron.

I want to be able to run as many virtual instruments as possible (using VE Pro if Pro Tools still is less efficient in that regard) along with audio tracks.

What would be most beneficial for sessions with lots of Instrument Tracks (mainly sample libraries but also soft-synths)?

1 Choosing a 24-core instead of a 16-core.
vs
2 Choosing 384GB instead of 192GB RAM.

Depends on how big the VI's are. Large orchestral templates with multiple articulations loaded of sampled instruments will need lots of memory.
Piles of synthesized sounds in an EDM/pop mix won't take very much at all.

Can you do a test?

Dominic

Thanks, Dominic!

It’s kind of a stupid question from me - of course more RAM is better when it comes to sample libraries, but on my MacPro 5,1 PT starts to get sluggish before I’m near my 128GB RAM limit.
I suppose/hope PT on a MP7,1 will use RAM in a more efficient way, and that it’d be wise to invest in as much memory as I can afford.

Regarding the 16- vs 24-core, I’ve seen some opinions here that the 16-core 3,2GHz with the faster CPU hits a sweet spot price/performance wise.
Price aside, would PT, especially with a large orchestral session (VIs mostly), perform marginally or a lot better running on a 24-core 2,7GHz machine?
