Custom plugin mapping explained!

Every plugin has a default knob mapping, but with Pro Tools’ Plug-In Mapping controls, you can create your own custom maps. See how to use the Learn button in Pro Tools to create your own custom mapping for any plugin.

How many Pro Tools users know that these "Map" controls have been right under their nose all along? You just need to connect the right kind of MIDI controller (or Mulligan) for them to appear.

I think they were added only a couple months ago? And they're hidden unless you have a qualified controller connected. So, small wonder that few users know about them.

Guy Michelmore released a vid on yt recently about the custom mapping built into Cubase. I was wishing PT had something similar. Apparently, it does. Sort of. Not as compatible with quite as many things, perhaps.

Maybe you're thinking of the custom mapping added to EUCON controllers, that was added fairly recently? (Like Avid shows here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fF-1TUzlaAU) That appears to use its own mapping scheme, which is accessed through the screen on the EUCON device. That is a different thing than what's built into every plugin window in Pro Tools.

That screenshot I posted with the red Learn button in the plugin window header shows the "Map" controls that have been part of Pro Tools for a long time. If you look in the big Pro Tools Reference Guide, for the section called Control Surface Mapping, they explain it in detail.

Correct! They are indeed hidden, normally. As I said:

The Pro Tools Reference Guide lists those qualified controllers as: 003, C|24, Command|8, D-Control, D-Command, and M-Audio controllers.

And now with Mulligan, you can access custom mapping using any MIDI controller, not just that list of qualified controllers.

It's a beautiful thing for Mac users. I might still have to make the jump to Cubase for my Windows composing rig.

Crap, there is even a FL studio type drum editor work around if you have the patience to set it up and save it as a template.

Dig deep…pt midi is way more robust than many think.

I agree! I don't have any problems with midi editing in PT 2021.12.0. Just the other day I matched the position of notes in a midi track to the notes on an audio track. Seems to work just fine for me but maybe I don't no what I'm doing.
