how could my drives not be fast enough?
hello all,
i am trying BTD a 5.1 film. 8 minutes, 5.1 - 5 aux channels, about 24 stereo tracks, maybe 5 plug-ins. 2 external reverbs used on aes/ebu channels for send return. everytime i try to BTD the 6 discreet files for the 5.1 i get the message that my drive may be too slow or fragmented and it stops. system details: g5 dual 2.5, os 10.3.5, 2.5 gig ram, pt 6.4cs9, hd2 Accell, atto ul3d scsi accelerator, 10,000 rpm cheetah drives. i believe my atto settings are correct. no QT in session, i use VVTR. there is more than 6 gig of space on the drive where the session is. won't let me use it to bounce to. won't let me BTD onto another drive, either. i guess i could try to clear everything off the drive, reformat and copy everything back, but, i am on a deadline. i will send this directly to DIGI tech support, but i thought i post here too. any ideas?

Re: how could my drives not be fast enough?
Hi Minister-
You might try to set up a patch which would allow you to record your tracks/returns to a new 5.1 track (or mono tracks) from the description of the session, It seems that you have capacity to do such a thing. charles maynes

Re: how could my drives not be fast enough?
hey charles! thanks for the reply. yeah. i figured on that just after posting. so i did that as a work around. it is almost as easy -- just have to setup the new "stem" tracks in and outs, and then export as files. two extra steps.
is part of my problem that i am trying to write back onto the same drive? i mean, i have a pretty fast system. not a fibre drive, but, accelerated scsi..

Re: how could my drives not be fast enough?
Hi Minister-
I can only speak from my first hand experience about the bounce issue- I think that there is a special set of conditions that are required when using the BTD function that are different from just recording. This seems strange because the GUI is almost entirely turned off. One would assume that BTD would be more efficient than normal operations. I don't really know why things work like that, but at least there is a way to accomplish the task. cheers! charles maynes

Re: how could my drives not be fast enough?
There's a thing with OSX "journalling" drives which can slow drives down.
I can't remember where the on/off switch for this is, but if you haven't checked this it might be worth doing a google. If you can't find any info about it, let me know and I'll try to track the info down. Cheers, Davy |

Re: how could my drives not be fast enough?
hi davy. the drives are not "journaled". i formatted them using Disk Utility as per Digi's instructions. is there something i am missing about journaling somewhere on my system?

Re: how could my drives not be fast enough?
Hi Minister,
Well, if your drives aren't journalled then that's my idea blown out of the water! I found this on a web page.... However, you can also turn off journaling in the Disk Utility (which lives in the utilities folder) by selecting your hard disk then going to File->Disable Journaling, which doesn't involve reformatting your drive and erasing data. |

Re: how could my drives not be fast enough?
Which DAE setting did you select? 2 (Default)? I experienced the same problem and setting my DAE buffer to 4 solved it...

Re: how could my drives not be fast enough?
I've had this problem since switching to 6.0 initially. And unfortunatly, haven't been able to resolve it. In fact, I don't that a two channel BTD works either. As was sugested, the best option is to create a 5.1 bus and record that into a 5.1 audio track.
