Structure Free sample multiple note playback /different durations
I apologize in advance if this is an already-addressed issue.
I have a vocal wav of about 4 seconds set up as a patch. I'd like to play multiple notes (e.g., an A minor chord), and yeah it works, but of course each note has a different duration. The lower the note, the longer it takes to complete the wav playback (so, in root position, the E completes first, then the C, then the A). It makes sense, but sounds terrible ( a little like the first 'oh no!' part in a horror movie soundtrack). Is there any way to synchronize the sample so that, regardless of pich, the playback duration is equal across all notes ? Is this something the for-fee Structure can do ? Or is SF the wrong tool ? Let me know if this needs more explanation. I've been researching the Structure Free reference and tutorial information with no luck so far. Thanks very much for any advice, links, ideas to try, etc. |

Re: Structure Free sample multiple note playback /different durations
I'd avoid any traditional sample players for the reasons you have mentioned. However, some have the feature to time-stretch a sample and preserve the duration which is perfect for your application. Kontakt I think has the option for example.
If you don't actually to need to play the chords then what about Melodyne or similar? Otherwise, you can try various pitch plugins. There's plenty to choose from these days. I think Waves OVox for example has keyboard input. Lastly, with Pro Tools to duplicate the track and use Elastic Audio to create the harmonies? Stephen

Re: Structure Free sample multiple note playback /different durations
I think the best solution would be to use a separate sample for each note. If you create/edit them all to the same length, since they won't need to be pitch-shifted, they will all play at their original length. Now you could create several notes from one sample by using Melodyne on the original, but like anything else, a drastic pitch change is going to sound less-than-ideal. I find 2-3steps in either direction about as far as is possible while retaining decent sound quality(no chipmunks allowed)

Re: Structure Free sample multiple note playback /different durations
Thanks for your replies, now I know i didn't miss anything obvious in SF.
I suspect that even if you could normalize the sample so a full triad could be played, it would sound drunk on the lower end, chipmunk on the upper end -- not that theres anything wrong with that, just not what i'm after... |
