Default Slight delay on audio track monitoring...

Hi All,

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me solve this small issue. In summary, I just moved (using Migration Assistant) a copy of Pro Tools 10 app from a Time Machine backup drive (backed up from a MacBook Pro 2011 running Pro Tools) to a Mac Pro (the new 2013 dustbin style, quad-core, 64GB RAM).

The hardware element is an Avid MBox 3.

After migrating, I opened a new session, it worked fine then a dialogue kept telling me the HW Buffer sample rate was different from the session. So I opened another new session changing the sample rate to 44.1 and that solved it.

However, when creating a new audio track, and listening to myself speaking through headphones connected to the MBox, there seems to be a very slight delay, one that wasn't there when using the same setup but on the MacBook Pro.

Does anyone know if there are specific things I need to alter to get rid of this delay?

I've tried turning Delay Compensation on and off, Minimise Additional I/O latency on and off, changing the Delay Compensation Engine between None through to Maximum, none of which have made a difference to the delay I can hear in the headphones when monitoring myself in record ready mode.

Just a heads up - I've been using Pro Tools for years, BUT, on a fairly basic level. So I'm a bit clueless about all the settings and things, because to be honest once I can hear things how I want I tend not to mess with anything! So all I currently want is to get rid of the fractional delay so I can record VoiceOver artists and myself again.

I can provide any other specific details about the setup if needed. My guess is it's something to do with the Mac Pro being a beast of a thing?!?

Thanks again,

Phil

Are you in "low latency monitoring" mode? What buffer setting are you using?

Hi,
No. I turned Low Latency on and it turned off monitoring altogether! As for buffer setting I'm not sure I'll check tomorrow morning and get back to you.
Cheers,
Phil

Hi,
When you ask what buffer settings am I using, do you mean H/W Buffer Size? If so, it's set to "1024 Samples", the highest. I just tried changing it to 32 samples (the lowest) and the delay disappeared! Yay! However, what does this mean in terms of recording? Is it now going to do something different?

Cheers,

Phil

Hi,
You'll most likely have to change to a higher buffer after you start mixing/adding plugins etc., but turning it down during tracking is the common procedure.
