Default Ocean\'s Eleven Soundtrack

Please excuse my French, but bloody h3ll! Is it me? Or is this just a fierce and vicious work of sound-art?

Just a LITTLE history: When I first saw this film, I went back and watched it TWICE the next day. The film is cool, but the MUSIC blew me away, man.

So, a buddy comes by the crib the other night, and he's got the O-11 soundtrack CD with him - he's giving it to me as a gift. His name's Lou, I call him "Blue" Lou because he's a serious jazz afficianado; and partly because he's 6'9" and 350 pounds, he's a semi-employed security detail for Curve Industries, but that's a whole other subject...

Anyhoo, Lou and I are drinking Yuenglings and listening to this stuff by David Holmes, and it is just wicked mad amazing stuff. Whacked-out jazz-electro, sounds beautiful. Incredible stereo imaging, definition, dynamics...it's all there, man. Of course, the first thing I do is look into the liner notes of the CD sleeve to see the production notes, and it goes exactly like this:

Score:
Music by David Holmes
Published by Warner-Barham Music
Produced by David Holmes
Programmer, Pro Tools: Stephen Hilton
Engineer: Hugo Nicolson
Second Engineer, Pro Tools: Jim Schultz

...and it goes on to list the musicians.

Has anyone else turned on to this CD? What are your thoughts?

I mean, I dunno, I'm new to Pro Tools, and haven't really gotten into it enough yet to know what it's capable of FOR ME. But this CD is like a benchmark for me now.

Does anyone know any of these cats who were involved with the O-11 stuff? Any antecdotes?

Thanks in advance.

Pick up a copy of David Holmes' CD "Let's Get Killed". Some of the music from the soundtrack was lifted from this full-length album. Amazing stuff!

Well, OK. After seeing/hearing the movie, I was wondering if you had perhaps heard Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters" "Thrust" and "Secrets" albums? That's pretty much where it took me... Good styles in which to be but sure not what I expected!
On the DVD, there is a 'bonus' commentary track done by the director and writer which is hilarious and worth the trip.

Man, the 'In a Silent Way' thing with the wah wah Rhodes piano....caught my ear. Awesome upright bass playing.

...check out the Vox organ accompiament---classic 60s sound---at the end of the movie.

A 10 on my scorecard.

(I just checked out Hotel Chelsea...soundtrack by Wilco. To bad the dialoque skips at the end)

Greetz,
I was also a second engineer on the Ocean's project. Heres some info:)
All the stuff was tracked with heavy use of Coles ribbon mics thru various vintage mic pres (neve, api etc..) info a PT Mix system using the 888/24 converters.
In that rig, Steve Hilton cut chopped and worked his magic, outputting 48tracks into our Euphonix CS3000 (analog). Hugo mixed the stuff down in the Euphonix with some vintage effects and we printed into a PT-HD system using a 192 i/o.
Everything I've worked on with these cats has sounded totally amazing, its an awesome team:)

Cheers,
- Mike Olson

Mike Olson,

Damn, sorry dude, I didn't list your name in my post, it was the next name down on the CD credits from Jim's.

Yo, great job. O-11 is ill. Thanks for the additional info.

I had checked out the Studio @ Sunset Marquis' website when I got the CD. I can only imagine how cool it must be to work there. I know I would be giving that swimming pool a workout on my breaks.

PEACE
