Default Partitioning for sample/loop libraries?

Along with my 6.4 LE, I use Ableton Live, and also Drum Samples from folks like Drums On Demand.

When on the road I use a portable firewire 800 drive... Should I partition that drive with say 10Gb of space for samples & loops, or leave them on my system drive, and use the f/w purely for recording on? I guess the same question applies to my main f/w backup a La Cie at home...

Tried a search on the DUC, nothing specific came up...

Any "best practices" appreciated...

Thanks...
