Default 003 - Gain control (Inputs 5-8)

Ok so we have an 003 digidesign desk at the Studio and I already understand we cannot boost the levels from these channels up to line level. We do however have a pre-amp built in to a custom Orchid stage box to boost channels up to 5-8 by a considerable amount but still either the signal has a lot of head room or just comes in way too hot.

We have came up with a theoretical plan that if we constructed a custom set of jack ins and jack out potentiometers, would this work? We could then lower the signal if it came in way too hot.

So in short do you think this plan would work?

The preamps in your custom don't have gain adjustments?

Unfortunately no. They just 'boost' the signal.

Its essentially a stage box with 4 XLR ins and 4 Jack ins, the Jack ins have the small pre-amp which boosts them to line level however there is no control on it what so ever.

I didnt buy it but its almost pretty much useless. It does make the signal better however theres no control.

Its time to buy some real preamps. You can spend as little or as much as you like here. Little being to use cheap preamps like the Golden Age Pre73, ART or similar, on up to something like the Focusrite ISA428(which I use) or an API 3124 or Vintech 473. You have a lot of options here

Yeh we were hoping we wouldn't have to go down the pre-amp route however this is looking more and more like we will have to.

We were considering a cheap Behringer preamp with eight inputs and just use the optical to the desk and instead of having four adjustable inputs we would then have twelve.

Only thing is we would need another stage box!
