Default vocals sound distorted on record but play back fine

Vocals monitor distorted while recording (esp peaks) but meter well under clipping. Same recording sounds great in playback...

(Imac 3ghz, sys 10.6, 002 -or mbox2pro-no difference, PTle 8.04, OWC firewire drive)

any thoughts?

First thought: If it sounds good, it is good.

Second thought: Something is wrong. Either with the way the way you are diagnosing the problem (a badly calibrated meter), or... I don't know.

Edit: wait, you hear distortion when recording but not when playing back? If so, you have a monitoring problem. Is the source doubling up when you are in record?

Nope, can't double up with my 002 config ... normal 'low latency' mode. Never had this with 7.4 and have only been using 8.04 for a short while, noticed this in the last few days. Up-to-date digi and waves plugs + celemony

Your plugs are disabled in low latency mode. Are you sure they aren't dropping the gain on playback? Are you using pre-fader metering?

Also, you might want to check under preferences: Link Record and Play faders.
