Default Always have to re power cycle 003R.....

If I leave the 003R on for an extended period of time (say overnight) and try to fire up PT, it hangs up on setting up periferals. I always have to do a fresh recycle of 003R to get PT to launch. I`ve tried 4 or 5 different firewire cables and nothing changes. Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks

Roy

Is it mounted in a rack with other stuff packed tight against it? Just wondering if adjacent rack pieces are getting really hot and messing with the 003. First I've heard of this myself.

I think the keyword is peripherals.....is the someting thats pluged into the computer or 002 thats gone to sleep? mice? MIDI gear? I'm guessing its looking for something. What happens if you trash prefs b4 launching?

The rack is mounted clear of any other gear. Here is the chain.....mac/PPA Firewire drive/WD firewire drive/003Rack. I cant think of anything that would be going to sleep.

Where I work on one of the edit workstations we have a similar problem with a MBox 2 Pro. That one we don't have to recycle anything we just have to disconnect the FW cable, then reconnect it. After that PT sees the MBox.

I've had the problem. I usually leave my 003R on for days/weeks on end and Pro Tools seems to not have a problem until I close Pro Tools, leave the 003R on overnight and then try to open Pro Tools. If I close the session but leave Pro Tools open then I can open a session days later without a problem.

But if I close Pro Tools and try to reopen it with out recycling the 003R, it hangs almost every time. Which is what would I expect considering the how the 2 parts of the system talk to each other.

It looks to me as if the 003R looks for Pro Tools and if it doesn't see it after a period of time "disconnects". If I remember correctly, most computer interfaces are like a conversations, if your not listening then I'm not talking. If your closing Pro Tools then the 003R has lost communication with your computer just like if you try to open Pro Tools without the 003R on. Computers are very finicky about connections and sequences, they have been since Apollo 13 :)

Another inherent problem is electromechanical devices are not perfect by any means of the imagination. I worked on electronics for military type products where you would see an anomaly after 10,000 hrs of operation and never see it again and a similar box would never have the anomaly. And for that very reason there is triple redundancy in almost all military computer components.

The general rule for me has been to recycle the 003R every time Pro Tools needs to opened up, I always leave Pro Tools open when the 003R is on, I just close the session as a minimum to prevent mishaps.

Probably the most information we have gathered on this thread. Thanks. Question though........... why did I not have this problem with my 002 console with the same computer. I left the 002 on 24/7 and was always able to launch PT without a hitch. It was`nt until I started running 003r that this started happening. It`s very suspect.
