Mbox Pro_ footswitch problem

I am having a problem with my Mbox Pro ( not the newest) footswitch settings in ProTool 8 LE
(version 8.0.4cs2)
Macbook pro 2.26 Intel core 2 duo
2 gigs ram
OSX 10.6.6
Mbox Pro ( i think ver 2)

It all started when after working properly for punch in/out setting .. all of a sudden it started adding a track in record mode ( like loop record but i'm not in loop record).
checked the manual .. ????

Now I notice that I can not change the setting in the harware from stop/start > punch in/out.

SO .. I am unsure if it is a glitch in my LE software , OS .. or ???
I have tried trashing some of the preferences.

*** please note that I am aware of settings for auto punch in/out .. so , please do not reply with answers pertaining to auto punch ***

I have had several systems and not had a problem like this before .. seems like something is very very glitchy ?
