Cd Burning speeds

Does anybody notice a loss of quality when burning CD's (Audio Files) 1x,4x,6x,12x?
Converted at best quality from PT.

ALL glass master CD's are burned at 1X...

With my own tests, I notice a huge difference between 1x-2x-4X...

I will always burn at 1X for the very finest sound quality......

I read in several places that the faster you burn, the better the results?

Everything I have read says that you run the risk of buffer underruns the faster you burn.........YES---NO????

Parphrased from page 65 of the MLCD manual:

-When using Direct Mode (aka: the Write CD window), write speeds of 4x and 2x can create CD's with a drastically less tendency for errors.

-Although it makes no mention of it, I assume that this is in relation to writing a CD in real time.

-As of the writing of this manual (MLCD v2.0) 4x was the highest speed MLCD supported. If I assume (again) correctly, you should always burn at the fastest speed which your CD Recorder and/or media can support.

I understand and have read the manuel. My question is about degradation of sound. I know the faster the speed the less errors but then why do all mastering labs burn disks at 1x speed. I notice a lesser quality at faster speeds. Does anyone else notice a difference? i've always used 4x for my burning w MLCD I wonder about the faster speed burners.8x etc... HELP!!PT

This seems pretty strange to me about using the fastest burning speed possible that your software will allow. Everything I have ever read or heard in any pro audio recording forum has always said to record no higher than 2X speed to prevent errors or dropping of BITS. This seems to be the standard logic for digital technology. Unfortunately we still live in the pre-adolescent days of digital technology. It's growing up quickly and we are closer to acheiving all the glory of those analog days with the ease and speed digital offers

If you think every mass production plant is burning CD's a 1x speed you should re-invest in ADAT's . Every Cd I've produced in the last four years has had CD burned at 4x in MLCD with PT. Could it be that some of the cheeper quality Cd burners are more prone to errors and sound denagration? I have the same burner ( yamaha ) that every Pt rig has in nashvile and we all are doing the same. I just wanted someone from a mastering lab to commit, or have someone address this in an upcoming audio mag. Any offers??

AFAIK all that is specific to the burners.
Plextors seem to have more BLER when burning at 1x and are perfect with 2x, 4x and 8x.
Don´t rely on me though...
