Default Mixing the overlap of the end of vox take and start of new take

Hello!

My first post, lets hope this also helps others and Im not alone on this one..

I have 2 tracks for the lead vocal as the end of some takes slightly finish after the next take starts.

Ive previously just faded the end of the take out to make space for the next take but you cut off words doing this.

Ive heard in many professional records they're able to make the end of the take audible and clear whilst the start of the next take comes into attention. How?

Is it using clip fx (EQ or comp) to make space? Is it some weird side chain comp? The only strategies that come to mind seem tedious and impractical.

If someone can share some insight I'd appreciate it greatly.

Thank you.

Sometimes you can use Elastic Audio or Melodyne to alter timing(if things feel good now, then this would not be a good option). Of course, there have been songs by some major acts where the lead vocal is on 2 tracks and there is overlap between the two(Keep Yourself Alive, by Queen is a prime example).

Can't really say what the best approach would be without hearing it. The tracks in your screenshot seem to be more than slightly overlapping.

Seems to me the answer is with either fade in fade out, or ramping volume automation
The fades in your screen shot are short and steep
So if your cutting off words using fade then just lengthen it and make it shallower
In PT you have complete control over the duration and steepness of fades And then consider using automated EQ for just the transition length and use cut and boost to differentiate the ending of take 1 from the beginning of take 2

There's always a long cross-fade
