Just an opinion, but i7 is the only way to go, no matter if its PC or Mac(and only socket 1366 and 2011 for PC). If you are concerned about the price difference, consider how long you will use the iMac. Let's say, for argument, that you will run it 5 years. Now divide the price difference over 5 years. Still wanna save that amount?

It's not about price - I saw a used Mid 2011 iMac and it was $1,100 which is a pretty good price - FW800 and 2 TB ports

It looks like a nice system but I thought I remembered something about this i5 not being compatable with PT? I am imagining things?

Pretty sure it wouldn't be my main rig but - once I see all that glass - I get googly eyes !!! It would probably be for a backup system - that's why I was curious about compatability

Well, those 27" screens are pretty seductive. I've seen i7 iMac 27" for $1400-1600 on Craigslist

I have an i5, and it works just fine. This is my mobile recording and editing setup, so I haven't tested with heavy plugin usage.

I have a Mac Mini with an i5 (2.3 GHz), it's working fine for me with PT 10.3.2, an mBox2, Lion for a long time but now Mountain Lion. I was a little worried about upgrading to ML but everything went fine. I rewire PT to Reason 6.5 often and it's working smooth as silk.

I'm loving mine I picked up as a refurb from Apple. Never thought I'd need a 27" but it's nice for sure. To the op I'd suggest going for the i7 option if there's one available - the hyperthreading alone is worth it.
