Quieter internal drive for new mac pro?
Just got a new mac pro (quad 2.66) and the drive is a bit noisy environmentally. Can anyone recommend a good internal replacement? Coming from an imac which was absolutely quiet to this is a bit of a buzzkill, there is intermittent seek noise (chickachickachickachicka) that is driving me crazy - don't think it's defective, just not as quiet as I want. Currently has the 640gb seagate (I think) but think it would be good to go ahead and move up to 1 tb.

Re: Quieter internal drive for new mac pro?
I've had noise issues with seagates, fujitu's and toshibas. I've always gone to Hitachi drives, they're by far the quietest IMHO.

Re: Quieter internal drive for new mac pro?
You should check this one out :
ST3500418AS http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.js...00f5ee0a0aRCRD I'm using 4 of these in my MacPro. Thinner than an normal 3.5", lighter and does not get warm even when I use them for Audio Streaming. And I can hardly hear them spinning in there... 500 GB, perfect for audio. Just remember to keep 30% of free space. Google them, and check out some reviews/tests... G

Is anyone using the western digital black caviar 1 tb drive? (not the one that will spin down to 5400 but instead stay at 7200)

SSDs are dead quiet (no moving parts) but not cheap and not vary big

I was recommended these from the DUC. I put 3 of them in a Mac Pro. Very quiet.

Went with 1 TB wd caviar, black (WD10000LSRTL). Much quieter all around idle/seek/writes. 105 clams from microcenter....

Re: Quieter internal drive for new mac pro?
I'm glad things worked out for you with the quieter drive. I do need to ask however, why didn't you take it back to your Apple dealer. You said you just got a new MacPro so I'm assuming it is under warranty. It could be a free replacement. Did I miss something?

Re: Quieter internal drive for new mac pro?
Glyph offers SSD drives now for pro audio. They start at $400 for 64 GB and move up to $800 I believe for 96 GB. Since they have no moving parts and no fans, those would be the most dead quiet drives you can get! You could use a 64 GB drive for your sessions and then transfer them to a regular drive when you are done. They are supposed to be fast and of course...quiet.
