Default Opinions on Mic Pre: Part 2..

I originally sought out to get an Octopre, but after much consideration decided that I really don't have much use for all the extra inputs (since I don't record drums), nor a total of 8 mic pre's, so I find myself back at square one: In search of a good 2-channel mic pre.

I originally sought out the Octopre for it's converters as well, as I've read those on the 001 aren't that good so I'm seeking suggestions for a mic pre that:

- has 2 channels (for dual mics)

- has converters as well (don't know if they make them with both A/D and D/A converters..)

I make mostly HipHop music with some R&B so that is what this mic pre would be used for..

Assume a price range of about $500 or so..

Thanx in advance,
- GAPE

Ok ... <preparing for the flood of nay-sayers>, I have been looking for a way to add those S/PDIF inputs via mic pre, and this is one that keeps popping up: ART D-MPA. Now, I know that ART's stuff is generally looked down upon, but this is a more costly piece of equipment than their little "stomp box" type of pre's. I don't know ANYONE who has one, but it is a two-channel tube preamp with digital outs -- reportedly capable of high sample rate, 24 bit transfers.

And, I think it is roundabout your price range as well.

Let the flogging begin!

Well .. I guess ART's questionable rumour has started because they make very cheap preamps (like Behringer) and maybe this smells of making big money of naive DAW owners rather than making quality musical gear. They know that the word "tube" sounds good. But I'm not sure they know how to make a tube sound right. Well .. I'm considering a Millennia TD-1 which includes the HV-3 (maybe the best/clearest/cleanest preamp in the world?). This box lets you switch between tube and FET .. all in one box VERY nice.

Everyone ... I am assuming a +/- $500 range here. Sure, I could recommend the Avalons, API's, etc., but that is wwwaaaaaaayyyy out of budget!

All,

Basically, I have my RODE NTK mic going straight into the 001 with absolutely no additional gear at my front end.

As I read more and more I realized that that needed to change, and now that I have a couple hundred dollars saved up it's time to shop! However, I have the slightest clue as to where to begin. I've read and understand that adding an A/D, a D/A, mic pre, EQ, compressor, to ones front end is ideal, but how do I group these in terms of gear as I've seen mic pres with EQ and/or Compressors, A/D and/or D/A, Limiters, etc.. and which can I really do without (for now)?

Is it better to get a mic pre with a compressor, converters, limiters, or EQ? Or even just a plain mic pre and get more hardware for the rest of the stuff?

And then after getting the said mic pre, how should I group the remaining needed equipment?

Thanks guys (and gals),
- GAPE

Does it have S/PDIF outs? I thought that was one of the criterion for this purchase.
