PT LE 8 Hang on Startup

Running PT LE 8, with a 002 rack, I can't seem to get beyond the Setting Up Peripherals stage of start-up, even after trashing all my plug-ins. I've tried all the usual things, trashing preferences, rebuilding permissions, reinstalling QuickTime, security update, PACE extensions, changing firewire cable and patch point, even creating a new account and re-installing ProTools, etc. Nothing seems to work.

Dual 1.8 PowerPC G5
System 10.5.6
2.5 GB RAM
SATA 2 x 150 GB formatted HFS+
no firewire peripherals (except the 002 rack)

Sometimes I hear a light clicking sound from the 002 around the time of the crash, but all the status lights are normal.

Any clues?

Could this be a hardware problem with the 002, even with this crash report.....?
