Default \"Audio Record Volume\" message?????

MAC Power book G4 w/ 1G(2x512mb)
OS 10.3.4
80GB Ultra ATA Drive @5400RPM
Digidesign 002R, Pro Tools LE 6.2.2
LaCie 2d 160GB External Fire Wire Hard Drive

When I try to create a new session and I select my external hard drive as the place to create it at, I get the following message:

"Session must be on audio record volume"

I've reformatted the drive, trashed my preferences, reinstalled PT twice, and run repair disk, as recommended by Digi Tech Support. I can't figure out what the problem is. The computer, software, and the drive are all brand new.

And to complicate matters, I've discovered that if I create a session on my laptop's HD and then move the session folder to my external hard drive and run it from there, it'll record to it just fine.....running the session off the external drive, but recording the audio to my startup drive!

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

How is this external drive formatted ??

Raid will NOT work, and a few others will cause that message as well.

It must be formatted with Supported formatting utility: Disk Utility, included with Mac OS X

Open from the following location: Applications->Utilities->Disk Utility, or in the Apple Menu when booted from the OS X installation CD.

Select FireWire drive from the list on the left

Choose either the Erase or Partition tab

Choose Mac OS Extended*

If you plan on using your drive on both Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X, check the box next to "Install Mac OS 9 Drivers".

Note: partitioning is not an option using the Erase command. To increase performance and improve seek time Digidesign recommends that you allocate a portion of your hard drive for recording. In Pro Tools, Choose Setups/Preferences and click Operation. Under the Open Ended Record Allocation option, select Limit To and enter a number of minutes to be allocated.

*Also known as HFS+. Do not choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) for record and playback drives...

Now if you have done all that correctly, and it still gives you problems make sure the external firewire drive you bought is up to the recommended specs by Digi, which is: Oxford 911 Firewire bridge chipset - 7200 RPM drive

Check with the drive manufacturer to verify that their drive has the "Oxford 911" or comparable chipset & drive speed of 7200 rpm.

You may want to make sure your recording/drive allocation is set correctly inside of your preferences in PT.....

Hope This Helps--

I just erased the external drive AGAIN, but it's still giving me the same error message. The drive has an Oxford 911 chipset and a seek time of 7200 rpm.

Anybody else? Digi?

There is no error number. The message I put on the thread is the one I get, and that's all.

What is "journaling?" Do you mean to ask if I formatted the drive for OSX Extended (journaled)? If so, the answer is "no." I formatted it for OSX Extended.

Hi,

You should be able to go the Windows > Show Workspace Window and toggle your external drive to R for record. It you can not set the drive to a record volume it sounds like you need to run the Apple Disk Utility and run repair disk permissions on you system and audio drives. I would also recommend trashing the Digidesign Databases folders on the root of all mounted volumes. Sorry if this advice is redundant but I did not see you mention changing the drive's status in the Workspace Window.

Thanks,

Digidesign Tech Support

I went through the same mess until I found out about the Workspace Window as mentioned above. It worked like a charm.

Sounds like it might fix it, but I don't see "workspaces window" as a dropdown option under my "Window" menu. Should I see it if I'm in Pro Tools? In the Finder? How do I access this mysterious window?

Bill,, that IS it for sure,, since you said that everything else you did seemed to be the perfect wat to Formatt , etc..

So get to this window by being INSIDE of Pro Tools. Then in the drop down menus from above go to "Windows" the drop down menu that appears from that will have "Show Workspace", click on that. Then go to the applicable drives icon, and then see them little "A" & "V" colums, click on the letter in those colums that apply to the applicable drive, and then make sure all are switched to R , for record... And/or toggle them all back and forth, to make sure it gets changed/woken up ---

Hope This Helps
