Default Version Compatibility

Will a newer version of PT (10 and up ) be able to open a version 8 session?
If so, what steps need to be taken to achieve this?

You shouldn't have to do anything special to open up a PT 8 session with a current version. I recently took my LE 7.4 sessions to a pro studio for mixing and they opened it right up with no problems. (They were on PT 10. I think the only time where you had to do anything special was going from a MAC to PC session, but maybe even that has changed. If you were trying to open up a PT 12 session in PT8, there may be an issue with features not available in PT8, but you could still import the audio files.

Thx for the reply.

I seem to recall years ago that there was some type of process to go through. Has this been simplified in the newer versions?

In newer versions of Pro Tools, you can choose to save your session as a .ptf instead of a .ptx; the .ptf will open in older versions of Pro Tools no problem. I go from Pro Tools 12.1 to 7.4 and back all the time; no issues. Just be aware that settings for modern features like Clip Gain will be lost in the conversion.

Some plug-ins and/or settings may also be lost as will any features in a newer version of PT not in the older version.

This would not require any plugins so I guess I'm good to go.

Thx all for the help.
