Start by giving us complete system info, as opposed to ZERO info......

MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011)
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
8 GB 1333 MHz DDr3
El Capitan

no plug-ins activated; only three tracks of live recording
anything else?
the error message makes no sense as I wasn't using ANY plug-in
as far as removing goes, does it mean remove from the system altogether?

happened again
just playback. no plugins. three tracks
i opened the CPU meter and it shows things at around 8%-10% and then the gauge starts swinging up, higher and higher, like a wave in the sea.
there are also noises, like crackling
is there nowhere in my system I can find some kind of log to see what's happening?

What Drive is in that Macbook and do you record to that aswell or have you got the second drive needed if you have a spinner at 5400rpm as many of the older macbooks had?

Roll back to your back up of Yosemite. El Cap offers nothing in benefits for Pro Tools. Did it run before updating?
