Default Mojave on PT 2022?

Was hoping someone could chime in, as I am sure there are a handful who have the same set up.

On on a 2012 5,1 and maxed out (see sig) on the last possible OS Mojave.
My PT perpetual is about to expire. I am waiting for the next M1 Desktop to come out, which will probably be in 2023/2024 and a good year after that for Avid and Plug-ins manufactures to work out all the bugs.

Avid for years has generally supported 3 versions (current and 2 versions prior) of OS. This year upgrading I hesitantly went to Mojave 10.14.6 to get PT 2021.12

I want to upgrade again to get another year of PT Perpetual for all of 2022 especially with the sales going on now, however will Avid support Monterey in 2022 and thus only Catalina, Big Sur, Monterey will be required and thus making my system unusable?

Yes I know there are ways to get Cat on mine, I don't want to go that route for various reasons running a studio.

Hooping Darryl can chime in?

Any advice/opinions would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks

While I have no actual knowledge, I do also have my fingers crossed that Avid will keep hope alive for those of us on old-school cheesegraters, who are waiting for an Apple Silicon Mac Pro, and stuck on Mojave on our current machines until that happens.

I suspect AVID may keep Mojave in the testing cycle when Monterey become qualified. The reason is that keeping Intel Macs running with future versions of Pro Tools makes sense as there will soon be no more new Intel computers from Apple.

I understand your concerns but since PT 2021.12 runs fine on High Sierra even though it’s not supported, I don’t suspect Mojave will have any issues if Catalina is the low end.

I am in the same boat and decided to go the OpenCore route and am now running Big Sur on the 5,1. It’s actually much better and more stable than Mojave was. I figure this way I have another 1-3 years left on the 5,1.

Of course no one on this thread can tell you for sure what Avid's intentions are. I also am running a cheese grater with Mojave and ProTools Ultimate 2021.12. It's super solid and runs really well.

As far as I know there are still a lot of these cheese grater machines out in the professional world and I can't imagine that Avid would intentionally abandon them within the year. ProTools and a lot of other plug-in manufacturers are not ready for the M1 macs so I think we're looking at another year of transition.

The other thing to remember is that just because a new version of ProTools is released that doesn't support Mojave doesn't mean that your current version stops working. You can freeze your system in place until the new M1 world is solid. That is my strategy.

I too plan on staying on my Mac Pro running Mojave until the stars are aligned.

I heard of this from a few others, but since they didn't test it for 100% compatibility all around, brings me to question would it work on a 450+ track 5.1 mix with all the plugs out there for film/TV?

That's my main concern. As I am sure it works for basic 10 tracks for podcasts or 50t for music. Since a full feature 5.1 mix is a whole different ball game.

I routinely do 5.1 music mixes for TV and film as well as stereo record and commercial work on my home 5,1 Mac Pro based system. It has so far handled anything that my three NYC studio setups can (2019 Mac Pro, 2013 Trash Can Mac Pro, iMac Pro). All are single HDX and UAD Octo card systems. The lion’s share of my work is in the 100-200 voice range. In the past, I’ve “borrowed” an HDX card from one of the another systems for the rare 256+ voice session. I mixed the 5.1 versions of the current IMAX trailer on the home 5,1 Mac Pro that way. I have not had anything that large in since the Hybrid engine came along.

Thanks

I wish I knew this when I d/l 2021. I did NOT want to go to Mojave from HS, as I knew there would be a few issues and we have the same mac specs.

Big Sur/OpenCore has been solid for me. It does take quite a bit of research and thought to go down that route but if you dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s, it’s very good.

This is definitely the last OS for this machine though. If PT 2022 and beyond proves less stable on it than 2021, I’ll just freeze at 2021.12 until a real M1 Mac Pro arrives.
