Yep, everything would have to be rewritten.

But the move to Unix is not just an Apple thing. In other intense applications (like high-end video work and data crunching), Linux is growing faster and faster. Lots of the rendering you see in the movies is now being done on Linux boxes.

Hopefully the audio world will catch on soon. With PT and Logic on Unix (OS X), you could make the argument that they already have.

I try tracking at 128 or 256, but then it locks up and says to increase it. the last time i recorded i had it at 1024 and it didn't lock up, surprisingly. My G4 seems to go back and forth. For playback and bouncing down i've tried it at all H/W buffer sizes. I have the CPU usage set to the max of 85% on my computer. It doesn't allow a higher setting. I have the DAE set at 4 usually. It still locks up. I don't know why.

512 RAM, Single Processor, G4, Digi001, PTLE 6.0. Maxtor 80 gig external harddrive which i save the audio on connected via USB.

This might be the culprit. FireWire puts through 400 Mb/s vs. USB's 12 Mb/s.

Take Care,

Hey guys, if your in OSX...you gotta have MUCHO RAM!!!!!!!!!
Awhile back I seen a dual processor G4 choke on the demo "Salvation" tune!!!
It had only 512mb of memory. My G4/400(back then) with 1gig of ram played that song better. Up your RAM first...it's cheaper than buying hard drives or processor cards. c-ya

First off, there's no "set" position to the HW Buffer Size. It's common to track at smaller settings to reduce latency, then mix and bounce at higher settings to maximize your machine's abilities to handle multiple tracks.

Secondly, you don't mention an external FW, SCSI or internal IDE drive dedicated to audio. You may be able to get away with using some other solution, but you may have problems.

USB just ISN'T gonna cut it, and your system's boot drive is already working hard enough running the rest of the machine, as well at PT itself. Not only will this cause slow downs, but the constant I/O from the OS itself keeps that root drive pretty fragmented.

So to fix my problem...i need to get more RAM (say 512mb) and a Firewire harddrive. Am i correct in making this assumption? This will bring my RAM up to 1024. Thanks for all your help!

It is not necessary to get a fw drive, you can easily isntall a second internal drive for audio for much less money. the USB connections is definitely your main issue along with inadequate ram.

Apple has instructions online for easy isntallation of a second drive:

You definitely need a second audio drive. Audio is going to take up a lot of resources. One drive running the OS, PT, and writing audio is going to be overworked. Digi says this in the manual. I have a powerbook and never had any recording problems at all. PT is on the main drive and nothing but audio files goes straight to my second audio drive. It is works amazingly well.
