Black Lion Mod Audio Samples
Does anyone have any mixes that they bounced after they got the Black Lion mod?
I'd like to take a listen to a whole final product that used the upgrades

Re: Black Lion Mod Audio Samples
So just so I am clear. Does this mean new pre-amps too?
Can someone please explain the three different things going on here. Analog stage? Clock? Pre-Amps? Thanks, b.p.

Re: Black Lion Mod Audio Samples
The mod covers A/D, pres, and clock. They used to offer the D/A too as an additional option for another $125, but it looks like they dropped that. I remember seeing some discussion saying that the D/A was good enough so they didn't see any point in it. I had the full on mod done a few weeks ago, but just had a baby (well, my wife did) around the same time, so I haven't had much time to spend with it.
So far I have noticed that my monitor level is MUCH hotter. I have the knob at about 1/3 the position I used to when monitoring. Things may sound a bit clearer when monitoring too (or maybe it's just wishful thinking), but I think obviously the biggest difference will be when going throught the front end... so that won't really affect old mixes too much, unless you re-record stuff through the modded unit. I haven't had a chance to record anything yet though. Overall, I think it's a good deal to kick the 002 up a few notches. --- c

Hey Cwhite,
Thanks. So did they do all 4 pres? I might just have them do two? What kind of pres are they and what would you compare them to? Thanks again, b.p.

Hey CWhite,
I too just got mine back. The monitoring is improved the clocking takes care of that...Picked the modded pre over a UA-610 in a blind V.O. test. Crazy. Seriously, it's a no-brainer. http://duc.digidesign.com/showflat.p...c=1&PHPSESSID= MR

Re: Black Lion Mod Audio Samples
Here's some more chatter about the mod over at GS:
http://www.gearslutz.com/board/showt...&highlight=BLA Yeah, people are claiming that the modded pres are real, real good. My experience working with top-notch/boutique pres is pretty limited (to pretty much none, though I have used some decent stuff)... so I have no real scale or specifics to compare to... I just know it sounds A LOT better. I can't imagine anyone would be disappointed after investing in this mod. Compared to other options (like buying new A/D, pres, clock, D/A separately), it's a no-brainer for the price. FWIW, I did have them do the D/A mod as well, which must've been just before they discontinued it. --- c

Quote:
You sacrifice the ability to record more than 8 channels at a time, which is a pretty major benefit to anyone recording a professional ensemble with live drums. Any pre with ADAT outputs requires that the 002 be slaved, right? It's not possible to run, say, an Octopre while clocking internally. I wonder, though, could one use the S/PDIF inputs to get 10 channels in at once? Anybody tried this? The audio samples speak for themselves, though. The clarity on the direct guitar is astounding! Someone here should do a similar test with a Rosetta (since they used a Mytek) connected first via S/PDIF and then via ADAT.
