OT: Mini-Me or Rosetta 200?
Hi Everybody,
Just looking for some free advice if anyone has any to offer... I was thinking of buying an Apogee Mini-Me, as I would like to have a nice converter. The mic pres and USB option are also something that I am pretty interested in, as it would be great to have a small, totally portable recording rig that I could use while travelling. Granted I would not be able to use PT, but that's fine because I could just record into whatever and then import things back into PT when I return to my home studio. But then I started thinking that I would like to have a decent D/A converter as well, which means i would have to get the Mini DAC at some point in the future. This is not really a big deal, but it begs the question of why then not go ahead and get the Rosetta 200? I realize it's not quite as portable, nor does it have the built in pres, but it is a pretty decent piece of gear that I could certainly grow with for a while... You know, as i type this I realize that I'm still leaning more towards the Mini-Me, but I'm curious to know what others' experiences are with it. Do you think the quality of A/D conversion in the Mini-Me is equal to the Rosetta 200? Also, how do the Mini-Me's pres stack up against the ones in my 002- do you think they are significantly better? Anyway, thanks again for any thoughts... Cheers, Andrew |

Re: OT: Mini-Me or Rosetta 200?
From what i've heard the conversion on the rosetta is a little bit better than the minime.. however the mini me is a great deal.. the conversion is great, the pres are a definite step up from the 002 and its portable.. i used to own one and unfortunately had to sell it.. its just a matter of time before i buy another one..
hope this helps p |

Re: OT: Mini-Me or Rosetta 200?
i've never used the mini me but i do have the rosetta 200 and it completly rocks.
whenever i am recording something with 2 tracks or less (for me, pretty much everything except drums) it goes through the rosetta. i also LOVE the soft limit feature.

Re: OT: Mini-Me or Rosetta 200?
The MiniME was a little better than the Rosetta AD, as far as the Rosetta 200 the MiniME is no where near the same level.
Also the Rosetta's have no pres, pres would be the Trak2. If portable and all in one is your goal the MiniME is a good choice if not definitely go with the Rosetta 200. |

Re: OT: Mini-Me or Rosetta 200?
hey,
Thanks again for the advice! I think I'm probably going to go with the Mini-Me, as it satisfies a lot of immediate requirements... One day, when I actually build a real studio, I'll get a Rosetta and a couple U87's and a Great River Preamp... and a Summit tube compressor... and a... Best to all, Andrew |

Re: OT: Mini-Me or Rosetta 200?
Can you record into the Rosetta 200 A/D while monitoring the PT mix via its D/A - at the same time,
i too am split between a minime+minidac or Rosetta 200. |

Re: OT: Mini-Me or Rosetta 200?
Guy's
One variable that sticks to the forefront of my mind, is the obvious differences in transfer rates between the Mini Me and the Rosette 200. The Rosette 200's standard tranfer rate is 400 Mbits/sec with the ability of 800 Mbits/sec, depending on the compatibility of your Digi Hardware. The Apogee Mini Me on the other hand (...now I only presume that it is USB 1. The pdf documentation doesn't specify what version of USB.) so let's say, that the tranfer rate of the Mini Me is only 12Mbits/sec USB 1. This is a bit of a no brainer to me. There must be something more to this. I have a question, can you correct a Mini Me to a Digi 002 and have a tranfer rate of 400 Mbit/sec from the Mini Me? Any thoughts? filosofem

With USB it can only do 24bit 48khz... use it as an A/D into a Digi002 for example: 24bit 96khz Apogee is looking into a firewire option for the mini-me...stated on the site. (NAMM 2006??) the mini-me is USB 1.1 usb v2 is more difficult to design and sometimes, although faster has worse latency issues. usb has always been a difficul driver to write and optimize there aren't many usb2 audio units available besides i think it's not really needed usb 2... why design a 480mbit when firewire was already 400... pc guys would say usb 2 is much faster... 80mbits ! woohoo ! but the driver mess is terrible in the rossetta you'll need the firewire card option... comes out a little above a mini-me and mini-dac (both with usb option) If you use the 2 you might only need a USB option in the mini-dac (as you can link those 2 with each other and let them use 1 USB) i got them installed in both |

Re: OT: Mini-Me or Rosetta 200?
Further, the transfer rate of USB 1.1 is completely adequate for transport of 2 channels at 96Khz 24-bit.
